My daughter’s first birthday party was not what we expected, but I think that is what made the day a core memory. I woke up to hearing her cough from down the hall and was thinking, “Oh crap. She cannot be sick”. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t tempted to just play ignorant and check her temperature after the party, but as a mama, I knew that would be unfair to the other littles.
Sure enough, she had a 101.4 fever and was not feeling well whatsoever. Bummed was an understatement! The poor thing had already been sick all winter basically. And if you’re a mom reading this, you get the disappointment – all of my midnight feedings when Selah was a newborn was spent on Pinterest planning this birthday party.
So, it was brainstorming time. Reschedule? No, the in laws drove all the way from Missouri for this and we had other scheduling conflicts. Cancel? Ugh, no way.
The solution: let’s celebrate as a family, but decorate and prepare food as if everyone was still coming. We’ll take all the photos and get to make our girl feel just as happy and special despite her feeling sick. Everyone had a wonderful time together as a family. It ended up being really special!
It ended up being so much fun, intimate, and y’all we have leftovers for DAYS.
The theme was “Groovy One” with discos and daisies everywhere in the house. We served a taco bar for lunch and had a dessert table with a daisy cake and daisy cookies with disco balls spread out. It was honestly hard to eat anything because it was all so pretty! I was very impressed with our dessert vendors. I briefly told them our theme and was open to their creativity and they knocked it out of the park. And yes, they were as tasty as they looked!
There was a daisy theme balloon arch with a bubble machine to make a fun effect for the photos. Obviously I was taking photos, but I had an Instax Polaroid camera available as well. The balloon arch was so much fun putting together and wasn’t as complicated as I thought would be. The colors matched her theme perfectly!
