What to wear for your engagement session can sometimes feel as stressful as finding the perfect wedding dress, but it doesn’t have to be! So before you spend hours shopping online or trying everything on at your favorite boutique, check out these tips as far what to wear (and what not to wear) for your upcoming session. Keep in mind that at the end of the day, it is obviously completely up to you what you wear! These are only tips based from experience. My hope is that this blog will help you feel confident in your own skin before you step foot in front of the camera!
You and your S/O should be the focus of the session – not the patterns on clothing. Choosing solids will cut the distractions of everything other than your faces and your connection. Outfits may be a way of expression, but for these photos, your love for each other is the expression! We are telling YOUR story – not the story behind your fashion 😉
Great color options are anything neutral or pastel so that your faces remain the focus! I would also say try to avoid completely matching. Sometimes that can be just as distracting as patterns. This isn’t always the case, but it can be.
Now, if you’re anything like my husband, who despises wearing anything solid, by all means wear what you love! Small florals look very nice in photos so don’t feel like you have to avoid patterns altogether. The main thing is to not wear patterns that are so bold that it takes the focus off of you.
This is the most important tip I have. You could literally stop reading this blog post after this because that is how much value this tip has, in my opinion. Choosing outfits that make you feel comfortable and yourself will avoid feeling stiff and awkward trying to be anything else. Not everyone is comfortable in front of the camera and I totally get that! Wearing clothing that you would normally wear will help, even if it means disregarding tip #1 😉
A perfect example is from one of my favorite engagement sessions. Jackson and AnnaRuth (pictured above) were high school sweethearts with such fun personalities. They had two outfits picked out – a dress and button up, and T-shirt and jeans. I could not have chosen better outfits for them because it reflected who they were, which I would describe as happy, care free, and a zest for life and each other!
Again, just a tip and opinion – you may be a very trendy person, but for your engagement photos, I would go for a classic look so you don’t feel outdated looking at your photos even a year from now. I’m cringing at even the selfies I took with friends wearing chokers when that trend came back for maybe five minutes, HA.
This way you don’t feel rushed to change every 20 minutes and you get to soak up every minute of your session. Your two outfits can look however you want – whether it’s a dressy and a casual, both dressy, both casual – heck, if your engagement session is in the summer, let’s hit the water! This all ties back to tip #1 – whatever reflects the two of you best!
